2024 BJCP Exam Study Group
Peninsula Odd Fellows Lodge
04 Mar 2024 6:00 PM – 06 May 2024 8:30 PM
Runs ten weeks - Mondays 6-8:30 - starting March 4th, ending May 6th Do you like beer? Want to get roughly one billion Untappd points? Want to become a better drinker? Want to become a better brewer? Want to fill your closets with free brewery schwag? Really, really like beer? Want to help other homebrewers become better brewers? Want to drink flights of 14% imperial stouts on a monday night? If any (or all!) of these apply to you, then you -- yes, YOU -- should apply for the 2024 Oregon Brew Crew BJCP exam study group! What is the BJCP, you might ask? Well friends, it is the certification body for the people who write "recognized" or "certified" or "grand master VII" after their names when you get scoresheets back from competitions. You might be wondering: do I have it in me to aspire to such an august honor? Well friend, I'm here to tell you that if I can do it, you can too! Every year, the OBC holds a class in learning to recognize, taste, and judge all the subcategories of all major BCJP categories. It is a ten-week class, meeting one night a week, covering 2-3 major categories an evening. Most nights, we will sample between 10 and 12 beers, each a "classic" example of each BJCP subcategory, to prepare you for success on the BJCP tasting exam. We will also: introduce all major aspects of brewing; cover all major (and some minor) flaws, their sources, and how to correct them in the brewhouse; judge etiquette and good behavior; and tips and tricks for success on the BJCP tasting exam. The class will be held at the Peninsula Oddfellows Lodge, where the club holds the annual Holiday Party. The cost of the class will be $150 per member ($185 non-member, optionally comes with a free 1 year obc membership, a 35$ value...) and that cost does NOT include registration for the online entrance exam nor the tasting exam. (Costs for the online entrance exam are $10, and the tasting exam is $40, not payable to the OBC.). All costs go directly to the beer budget for the class, instructors are volunteers, overhead is subsisdized by OBC. This class is limited to 16 students. Please only sign up if you fully intend to take the exam at the end and promise to judge at least 1 competition in portland yearly. Preferably more, theres 6 a year. We volunteer to expand the judge pool in portland, as our primary goal.  If we have reached capacity and are accepting "Waiting List" submissions, or you have any other questions, email bjcp@obc.beer
